Federal Government Targets Production Of 50 Million Eggs Daily

Federal Government in collaboration with the private sector has fine -tuned plans to produce million eggs daily for local consumption, export and processing into egg powder for use in confectioneries and pharmaceuticals.

Chief Audu Ogbeh, Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development who revealed this in Abuja at the inaugural meeting of the National Egg Production Scheme (NEGPRO), said the overall objective of the Scheme was to “promote self-sufficiency in egg production and also develop the poultry value chain across the 36 States of the Federation and Abuja.

He explained that NEGPRO was set up to strengthen egg production, processing and utilisation capacity of the country.

He also noted that the Scheme would create additional one million jobs through egg production, processing and marketing as well as create a solid raw material base for the development of secondary egg processing industry to complete the value chain.

According to him, “This initiative would promote economic diversification, increase job opportunities and agricultural contribution to the National Domestic Product.

“The Scheme is for the period of five years and at full operation nationwide, it is expected to provide about million table eggs daily for local consumption and export.”

Ogbeh further revealed that the Central Bank of Nigeria has set aside N10billion for the take-off of the Scheme and approval of Bank of Agriculture as the participating financial institution.

Following the approval by the CBN, the Minister said six states from the six geo-political zones of the country have been selected for the implementation of the pilot project based on their comparative advantage and readiness to key into the Scheme.
